Why use this
Children draw what they remember, not what is there. A short walk with a clipboard, then the map, makes the drawing an observation.
The grid and compass turn a picture into a map. A feature that can be found by its square and its direction is one the child has placed on purpose.
How to run it
- 1.Walk the block. Stop at six places. At each one ask: was this here before people, do people look after it, or did people build it?15 min
- 2.Back in class, show the sample map. Point out the compass, the grid and the key.5 min
- 3.Sheet A: draw the map. School in the middle, then the streets, then the features from the walk.15 min
- 4.Sheet B: sort the features into the table with their grid square.5 min
- 5.Sheet C: mark a start and a finish and write directions. Swap and follow them.5 min
