Living, once living or non-living?

A mat with a column for each group and cards to sort into them. Students often call anything that moves living and anything still non-living. Sorting with a once living group forces the real test: does it, or did it, grow, feed and reproduce?

Why use this

Students often call anything that moves living and anything still non-living. Sorting with a once living group forces the real test: does it, or did it, grow, feed and reproduce?

Sorting makes the decision visible. A card put in the wrong column is a misconception you can see and talk about.

How to run it

  1. 1.Name each column. Sort one card together and say the reason aloud.3 min
  2. 2.Pairs sort the rest. Each card is placed with a spoken reason.8 min
  3. 3.Check with the key. Talk about any card that was hard to place.4 min
