Why use this
A circuit diagram with the real symbols is the language of every electrician and engineer. Students who learn a picture of a torch battery and a drawn bulb have to relearn it later.
Predict before test is the point. A student who writes 'off, because the switch is open' and then sees the lamp off has learnt what a switch does. One who only builds it has watched a light.
How to run it
- 1.Sheet A together. Draw each symbol on the board. Students copy, then match.8 min
- 2.Sheet B: predict all six first, in pencil. No building yet.8 min
- 3.Build and test each one. Record what happened. Explain the ones that surprised you.20 min
- 4.Sheet C: draw two circuits from the words, then the brightness test with 1, 2, 3 cells.10 min
- 5.Make your own: design a circuit that does a job. Swap diagrams and build.4 min
